Fishing with kids

What makes a manageable first trip?

Choose easy bank access and one simple rig. Keep the first session short enough to finish while the child is still interested.

  1. Check the adult and child licence rules for your state.
  2. Fit a personal flotation device near water.
  3. Show the space needed behind a cast before handing over a rod.
  4. Have an adult handle sharp hooks, tangles and unhooking.
  5. Bring water, snacks, sun protection and a rubbish bag.

Which tackle should you start with?

Use the fixed bobber example in reachable water. Small bait and a small float keep the task simple; the child does not need a box of lures.

What about a first ice trip?

Go with an experienced ice angler and read the Minnesota DNR guidance. A calendar month is not a safety check.
