Sustain 4000 FI

Eric

The reel is well built and the quality is definitely apparent. The reel is ultra smooth out of the box and spins effortlessly. However, one issue I had with this reel is how tight the retrieve is when retrieving a lure. It feels like you are reeling in a brick although it's just a 2 ounce lure.

Awesome reel.

Great reel

I use this reel for funny fish and striped bass. The only difference is the test of the braid and fluoro leader. Coupled with a good rod, it is a great fishing experience. This is my 2nd reel and I still use my old one every week.

Powerful little beast

Tough built, this reel handled 20 pounds Cubera Snappers, even managed to fought a 25 pound yellowfin tuna, the drag is amazing so as the feel. Totally recommend it, Shimano did it again l, great inshore reel.

Shimano is not doing something right

So I dont know what happend to shimano but after the black ci4 stradics, now all the 4000s and 5000s (Sustain, Stradic, even Stella) are way too tight retrieve under load. In the store when not under load they feel fine, but as soon as you're retrieving a lure it's too tight. But it's not just Shimano, even Penn is starting to feel like that too. Have Cabos and they are nice and read more effortless retrieve, as well as a Daiwa ballistic LT. The SW shimanos (saragosa, spheros, twin power sw, stella sw, even the cheaper sw's) all have effortless retrieve. But these new compact non SW models are way too tight and forearm tiring on the retrieve.

Great reel by Shimano

Fish two 4000s and they are great. Use them for striper and mahi.

Awesome

This reel is very light and strong enough to catch anything inshore to small tuna.

Shimano Sustain FI Spinning Reels Questions and Answers

Ask a Question

Asked by Steve 4 years ago

Can this reel be used in saltwater

Bernie De Graaf 4 years ago

This reel can be used in saltwater

Asked by Brad 5 years ago

1 year ago if there would ever be a Sustain 1000 FI .  When does Shimano introduces new models? I don't want a Stella 1000 FJ ( 5 to 1 ratio).

Bernie De Graaf 5 years ago

As far as we know their isn't a plan to make the sustain in a 1000 series size. There are shimano Nasci's, sedona's, stradic fk as well as the ci4+ model all available in 1000 size reels.

Asked by Michael J. 6 years ago

Is the drag knob metal or plastic?

Bernie 6 years ago

The drag knob on the Sustain is plastic.

Asked by Fabio 6 years ago

Does it have the same gearing as the FG model? including the plastic idle gear?

Bernie 6 years ago

The FG and F1 both utilize the X-ship gear feature while the f1 has the Hagan gear the FG does not.

Asked by Chang 6 years ago

Is the 4000 and 5000 really 10.1 oz?

Bernie 6 years ago

According to the Shimano site the 4000 and the 5000 are only 10.1 oz.

Asked by Brandon Macabeo 4 years ago

Does the 5000 size come with a power knob?

Tyler Bennett 4 years ago

Yes the 5000 comes with a eva power knob

Asked by Brad 6 years ago

Will the Sustain FI be made in a 1000 series?

Donald 6 years ago

There isn't any word yet on Shimano releasing a 1000 size Sustain FI model being introduced in the near future. Once there is the info will be posted on our site.

Asked by John Kim 6 years ago

Would the 5000 model be a good surf reel?

Donald 6 years ago

The Shimano Sustain 5000 would be too light in my opinion fishing from the surf. I would recommend using the Shimano Ultegra XTD models or the Shimano Saragossa models for surf fishing.

Asked by Rawlinson 6 years ago

Which reel is ideal for freshwater? The FG or the FI?

Donald 6 years ago

Either reel model could be used in freshwater. The 2500 and 3000 sizes would be the best options for freshwater use.

Asked by Sebastian 6 years ago

Hello Guys, is the c3000 version smaller (smaller body) than the 2500 size version? Or is there another specific reason for the different weights. Cheers

Devon 6 years ago

The C3000 is the same body size as the 2500. The C3000 simply has a larger spool and a different handle style.

Asked by Aaron Basillote 6 years ago

Does this model have the maintenance port?

Donald 6 years ago

The Shimano Sustain FI series reels do not have a maintenance port.

Asked by Locki 6 years ago

I would like to purchase a 4000 but the small handle is putting me off... Can the handle off a 5000 be used on a 4000?

Donald 6 years ago

Talking with Shimano directly, they verified that handles and even spools are interchangeable between the 4000 and 5000 models.

Asked by Nick 6 years ago

Donald 6 years ago

Asked by Dan Hutchison 6 years ago
