Bought two of these reels for Surf Fishing, they are amazing pieces of fishing gear, the finish on the reel is superb, they also cast very far and smooth with no bird nest, if it is set right for the weight you will be using.

This is easily the best reel I have ever owned. I have had one for around 15 years and never even had to get it serviced until year 12. It can definitely last a lifetime if properly taken care of. Just purchased another.

Great quality

This reel is very smooth, casts like a bullet and fits perfectly in my hand. I bought it to handle big crankbaits of 1.5 and 2 ounces. It does the job without effort and in style. I also use it for my smaller swimbaits and glidebaits. The drag is very smooth and the perfect match when fishing treble hooks.

Go to reel for anadromous species hunting in the NW United States. These have just the right amount of line capacity t get it done in a guided environment, and allow for a 5 minute line change when a newbie gets spooled.....
Very durable, low maintenance, and not a bank breaker; yet ready for everyday use.
Solid choice, solid reputation, good price for a tough player. read more Shimano has never let me down.

Perfection

I'm new to round reels and have loved this one since day one. It's weight and build quality are amazing and have shown how good they are time and time again. I've spooled it with 30lb braid and a 20lb fluorocarbon leader for saltwater fishing. It has been reeling buttery smooth and the brake on it is amazing. I did my research before buying and it hasn't let me down. If you're debating read more getting this reel, don't. Buy it and see for yourself how awesome it is!

You can use 30# braid on the Calcutta 400, but it is not a 30# class reel. It is a light saltwater reel. It would be great for Flounder, small to medium size Stripers, Bluefish, and Tog. The Lamiglas Tri Flex Inshore, Gloomis Pro-Blue, or St. Croix rods
