The construction is rock solid, exactly what you expect from Shimano. There is plenty of drag on this real. An excellent addition to my surf fishing arsenal!

Best reel of it's type

the baitrunner is the absolute best reel in it's class. Smooth drag, great range of sizes. I own two 4000s, one 6000, and a 12000. Would buy one again without hesitation. Have landed everything from 10 lb channel cats to 6 ft lemon sharks, no problems

The OG bait fishing Spinning reel

These were originally designed by Shimano for Carp fisherman back in the 80's. It didn't take long before ALL bait fisherman realized the potential and great design and soon they were used world-wide for not only Carp but Saltwater and Freshwater species alike. There have since been many companies replicate the design and they work great as well, but Shimano will always be the Baitrunner read more kings in my eyes.

I love my Penn equipment but when it comes to baitfeeder type reels Shimano sets the bar in my book. These things were originally designed for Carp fishing but the Salty guys and us Catfishing fanatics know they kick butt for any kind of bait fishing.

GREAT REEL AT A GOOD PRICE.

This is a great all around reel! Quality parts stand up to the harsh New England saltwater environment. Drag system handles large blues and bass with ease.

I live in south Texas by Port Aransas. I fish the flats out here a lot. Have the reel to throw out some crab for red fish or black drum. This reel does a good job. Happy with the reel.

First time using my new Shimano baitrunner 1200 and landed a 30 lb blackfin tuna. Great battle and the reel performed flawlessly. A gamechanger using live pilchards down here in south FL.

So you want a conventional that’s quality in appearance and performance except it turns out they only come in righty most of the time. Look no further this reel is designed for you to have that live-bait running type reel so the fish doesnt feel tension when they run with your bait. The best part it’s a spinning reel that is from a quality company that has a great if not one of read more the best customer service I’ve ever experienced from

Ask a Question

Asked by Peng 3 years ago

What rod would you suggest for the 8000d chucking bait?

Alex Trommelen 3 years ago

I would recommend a 10' or above for a Tsunami Airwave, Daiwa Coastal Surf, St Croix Triumph Surf, or any of the Star rod surf models would work great for this fishing application

Asked by STEPHEN POTTS 12 years ago

Can you use the reel in saltwater?

Customer Service 12 years ago

Yes, it was designed for saltwater use.

Asked by Damian 10 years ago

What is the warranty on shimano reels

Customer Service 10 years ago

Shimano has a 1 year limited warranty.

Asked by john lo bello 9 years ago

does the lever on the back allows the real to free spool and than when a strike occurs you just flip the lever to engage

Customer Service 9 years ago

Hello John. When you get a hit, you simply crank the handle and that sends the lever forward and disengages free spool allowing the spool to operate normally. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions!

Asked by Brian 9 years ago

Can you use 20lb braided line on the 6000D, or is the minimum 30lb?

Brandon 9 years ago

Hello Brian. You can absolutely use 20 pound line on that reel. The numbers you see in the descriptions are merely to give you an idea of how much line each size reel will hold. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions!

Asked by Todd 9 years ago

What is the difference between Baitrunner OC and D series?

David 9 years ago

The D series has one more ball bearing. Other than that the only real difference is the color of the real.

Asked by mike 8 years ago

I would like to put one of these onto a St croix Legend 7' spinning rod what size would you recommend for size / balance etc?

David 8 years ago

I would most likely go with the 4000 size, but that also depends which Legend you are using because there are a few different sizes. For inshore rods, I would definitely go with the 4000.

Asked by mike 8 years ago

The st croix legend surf 7' new model …… would that team up with the 4000 or would it be to small? Lure / spinners salt and some freshwater fishing are what I would use this for.

David 8 years ago

That rod and reel should pair up together great. A 4000 size reel is generally the size that I would put on a light saltwater and freshwater rod.

Asked by Bill Lees 7 years ago

I'm thinking about buying a St. Croix Legend 8 ft. surf rod. I would like to pair it up with a 6000 Shimano Baitrunner D Spinning Reel for surf fishing and inshore. Would this be a good match? Thanks. Bill. We sent an earlier e-mail but forgot to men

Donald 7 years ago

The St Croix Legend 8 ft would pair well with the 6000 Shimano Baitrunner D Spinning Reel for surf fishing.

Asked by James Fernandez 7 years ago

I'm pairing this reel with a star aerial 15-30 7 ft rod for live bait fishing. Mostly for the Gulf beaches and inshore stuff, big Snook & Tarpon what size mono and or braid would you recommend?

Donald 7 years ago

The Shimano 6000D would be a great choice to use with 40 lb braid for the application the combo will be used for.

Asked by Jim 7 years ago

I recently purchased the Shimano 8000 Baitrunner D from TD. How many yards of 30 lb braid will this reel hold? I cannot find this information anywhere specific to that lb test. Thanks again

Devon 7 years ago

Shimano does not provide the maximum line capacity for 30 lb braid on the 8000. You can count on getting around 320 yards.

Austin Kearney 3 years ago

For the 9' I would go with the 6000D. For the 10' I would go with the 8000D, and the 11' you could also go with the 8000D as wells.

What size would you recommend for a medium/ heavy 7’ rod for yellow tail, fishing with live bait, but also throwing irons and rapalas?

Paul Olah 3 years ago

The Shimano Baitrunner 8000D Spinning Reel, this reel offers the best line capacity for what you want to do.

Asked by Dara 3 years ago

Hi, I have Shimano speedmaster 11’ MH rod… would it good pair with Shimano Baitrunner 12000D? Thx

Paul Olah 3 years ago

It would pair well depending on the situation however it may be too much reel. I would recommend taking the step down to the 8000 size it will match the rod better.

Hi DTG, We recommend you go with the Shimano Baitrunner D Spinning reel in the 8000 size to get higher capacity using 65lbs braid. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with! Tight lines!

Asked by Kevin Curbow 6 years ago

I’m considering getting one of these to put on a 7’ St. Croix Mojo Cat rod, would you recommend the 4000 or 6000? I’m leaning toward the 4000 since it is smaller and lighter. I will be using this setup mainly for carp.

Bernie 6 years ago

I think the 4000 would pair up nicely with the St.Croix Mojo cat rod, my only concern is will the 15 pounds of drag handle the size carp your catching for that reason alone I would consider the 6000D.

Bernie 5 years ago

WIth the 10 foot rod I would pair it with the Shimano Ultegra ci4 5500 and for your pier setup a 6000 Penn clash would pair up with a 7 or 8 foot rod.

The 8000 size would pair up with the 9 foot well
