I use these reels for surf fishing. Easy to cast and an extremely smooth retrieve. Spooled with 30lb test, I can easily handle anything I hook into. Penn products are the best!

Great Charter Reel

I run a charter boat on eastern Long Island. Most of my fares are tourists with little fishing experience. These level wind reels keep knots & backlashes to a minimum so I can concentrate on fishing & not endless knots. They also take a beating throughout the season and require little maintenance.

Nice reel, lightweight

It's a nice reel at a good price point,
Lightweight, smooth.
Unfortunately, mine arrived defective, and had to be returned.
Exchange was not possible because it was out of stock.

Great product for the money

I bought 4 of these and half way through the season all 4 had broken down or seized up.

Not one of Penns better products

These graphite reels were not meant to last when used regularly. Graphite has a flex to it, so while fighting a decent sized fish, can cause the internals to become out of line causing stress and wear on them much quicker than an aluminum reel. Bearing and gear misalignment are your major enemies when it comes down to it with graphite frames, the flex just allows too much movement. read more Spend the extra cash and get an aluminum frame, you will be thankful 15 yrs down the road when it's still going strong as the day you bought it.

Bad line counter

bad line counter
I have purchased several Penn reels in the past, none of which have had line counters.
Recently I purchased two WAR30LWLC reels and neither of them had a working line counter that
you could rely on. The reels themselves are great so what I did was to purchase the parts needed
to remove the line counter from the reel and used metered braided read more line to verify the depth.
I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER PENN REEL WITH A LINE COUNTER.
In addition I contacted Penn’s customer service but had to leave a message but I’ve never
received a call in return. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!

Good Cheap Trolling Reel

I grabbed this to add another trolling rod to my setup. I had a rod I really wasn’t using and the reel went on it and could not be repaired. Based on the price point and having the smaller version warfare I decided to grab this while it was on sale. I couldn’t be happier.

For the money you can’t beat it

I use this real for bottom fishing for fluke sea bass and even light trolling for stipers. This reel is a good all around versatile piece of equipment at a cost everyone can afford. If your just looking to get into fishing or building your arsenal. This is a good grab.

A solid reel for the price, drag is smooth. Using this for leadcore and the 30 is a good size holding 300yds with some backing.

Asked by David Henley 2 years ago

Is this real fully sealed. Can it be submerged in saltwater? What are your recommendations for a good rod size and action to pair with the WAR15LW? Looking for an all around setup that can tackle some pier fishing, some inshore fishing, and freshwater cat

Brendan - TackleDirect Customer Service 2 years ago

Hi David, The Penn Warfare Level Wind Reels are not fully sealed and are not recommended to be submerged in saltwater. For your fishing application I would recommend a Penn CARINIII1530C70 Carnage III Inshore Casting Rod. https://www.tackl
