Have used 9/0 for trolling and shark fishing from shore for many years. Got a pair of new ones, to replace my 20 + yrs old set. I’m confident they will serve me well for another 20!

Good Highspeed Reel

I use these for my highspeed reels. They handle the big fish well. I have some bottom fishing as well. They are a classic reel that can be used for a variety of fishes

Long time Penn user (25+years). Purchased the 9/0 for atlantic canyon tuna.
All in all a good reel, but truly needs to have a level wind option on at least the 9/0.
This particular one has some serious issues with the star drag mechanism randomly tightening on it's own- to a point it cannot be moved without major effort, &/ or tools, including mid fight. (Huge stressor read more & not ok on a boat with 20+ other people! Deck hands even had trouble trying to free it up when it would happen, & we all agreed something was significantly not right with this particular individual reel. As it had never been fished, was out of the box & set up professionally 2 days before this trip.)
This issue wound up leaving you with no actual drag & no control or adjustment over it. Also lead to massive backlash troubles randomly when using the significant weight to reach canyon depths. Though less weight caused equal issues with that.
You'd set it, & next thing you know the drag adjust mechanism is overtightened, immovable, & at the same time you have zero drag power allowing the fish or even just the weight & bait to just peel line off the reel with no way to stop or adjust it.
This is NOT a reel you can even *think* of using the "free spool" feature on, ever!
You want epic backlash? That's how you get it.
Thankfully, I knew that when I saw it's design. However, it is something to be aware of.
All in all it's a reel I do like- & when it worked properly, it worked very well.
Plenty of power, easy to handle despite it's size & weight.
It is heavy, but with the right rod it makes a balanced, efficient package for my needs. A great price & TDs customer service was awesome.
I would recommend it to others with the warnings about the drag adjust issues & that it is not, in fact a level wind.
Would I purchase another? Maybe.
A level wind version, definitely.

Solid build at an affordable price.

I have two of the 113 size. Set up for pier fishing, they cast out surprising well on the right rod. Not the newest design, but proven to work.

I bought my dad a few of these for Christmas last year and he loves them. We use them as trolling reels for stripers off of Cape Cod, but also for tuna. We have 3 of the mid size ones and 1 bigger one which we use for our bird teaser when trolling for tuna. The reels are great for anything from small bottom fish to large tuna, they are built to last and I was just handed down 2 read more penn pier reels from 40-50 years ago that still work amazingly. Penn is built to last.
