Fantastic reel for muskie fishing

Bill

I used FTH300LP for muskie fishing. It is fast enough for me and has very good cranking power. It took me quite a few cast to get used to the breaks. I tried to turn off centrifugal break compeletely and use the magnetic break only when I just got the reel, but kept getting mild backlashes. After changing to 2 centrifulgal break setting (out of 6) and nearly 0 magnetic break, the read more problem went away and I can get consistent long cast. Love the solid yet smooth feeling of this reel!

30 pounds of drag with a fast retrieve - Love it. I have 2 of them and use them fluke fishing. Great reels.

My Calcutta Replacement

Fishing local SoCal for 30+ years, my go to reel for much of that time has been my Shimano Calcutta's. Tried and true for decades of use, on my Calico Stick with swimbaits, to dropper loop on the flats, I never found a reel that would do this any better.....until now! The technology is mind blowing, filling all the needs my round calcutta's used to, and adding capabilities I never read more thought possible in a low profile "bass" reel. The drag is insane for this size of a reel, and with braided line, have the capacity to legitimately tangle with yellowtail and small tuna, in a package that literally fits in the palm of my hand. Just like its larger Fathom brothers, freespool out of the box is as good as it gets, and casts like a dream. I guess I can finally retire my gold calcutta's!

It’s a very solid reel, well made and very durable . The magnetic casting feature and breaking system is a great feature . 30lbs of drag and plenty of power to help lockdown some decent size snook here I’m South Florida.

Smooth Operator in any water

Let me start off by saying , I would have never thought in a million years that I would buy another bait caster ... my first bait caster was a EZ cast combo from Walmart, I figured what the heck I’ll give it a shot.. after birds nesting so many times I gave up.. I had watched a few videos and got motivated to using it once more ( YouTube makes everything look a lot easier).. read more I stuck with it and finally got the hang of using it with ease.. I guess if practice makes perfect... fast forward 3 months ..
I ordered the penn low profile 200 bait caster.. ( night and day difference) easy to dial in different weights , cast super far , smooth drag , i kind of regretted not getting it earlier, but this Is what makes me appreciate it more .. spooled with 30lbs braid ,bird’s nest are to a minimum.. usual operator error of not dialing in the lure size .. I would recommend anyone who uses a bait caster or thinking of getting one to purchase a penn low profile one .you can use it in freshwater and saltwater.
Quality performance in a small package..
I’m definitely going to get another one .. maybe. 300 or 400 high speed.

I haven't had an opportunity to fish this reel yet but I have been able to make some cast from my dock. The Penn Fathom low profile is one of the smoothest casting reels I have ever used. I have it paired with a 7' St. Croix Avid X. Can't wait to put this reel on some big Stripers and some monster Reds.

A couple weeks ago, I finally found one of these reels, a 400 and was I impressed! Really like my Slammer III 4500, my 'go to' snook reel but this little beast was as strong if not stronger than my Slammer III 4500!
