Well built and plenty of power. Smooth and perfectly designed. Several of my buddies owned this popular reels so I decided to get one myself and I was not disappointed. Highly recommended for anglers who want to buy a descent reel...this is the best in its class.

Awesome reel

Extremely well built
Great price for a lever putting out 30lbs of drag!
Fishing mainly halibut and salmon off coastal california. The 25 n has been a perfect combo. 65lb braid with a 40 lb top shot. Smokes them!

A Workhorse

I have used this reel on a mojo jigging rod for everything from tog to cod. I have a 2 speed version I've used for tilefish and a smaller model I've used from my kayak. I'm impressed with the performance of all of them. The price isn't outrageous and if they hold up over time they will be a real value.

Full Metal Body and 40 pound drag for the price

a total no brainer. The reels are also great looking. 40 lbs of drag for $250 is a true bargain.

Wahoo killer!

Mark

This may be the best reel for wahoo fishing if you're throwing bombs or jigs, very high speed gear ratio and enough drag to stop wahoo in their tracks.

Great looking reel and awesome drag for the price

i mean a good looking $249 reel that is all metal and has 40 lbs of drag, sign me up any day of the week for that. Penn has rebounded. American made again now, and has seemingly redesigned and sealed the drags on these new ones which is great.

Great bottom and light trolling reel

Great all around reel for bottom fishing and light trolling. Paired it with a 5'6 Ugly Stick Tiger Elite Jigging rod and its the most comfortable setup on the boat.

Quick retrieve

John

Great high speed retrieve. Used it for smoker kings and was able to keep ahead when one came speeding to the boat. Kept the line tight and was a good thing, hook fell out when I gafted him and threw him in the boat.

Awesome

I use this reel for my marlin pitching rod, the fast free spool and retrieval work great for maneuvering around the marlin.

Nice reel, light and strong

Reel is light and strong, the only thing I would criticize would the gears are not as smooth as I have come to expect from Penn

Perfect chunk/jig reel

Ryan

I bought this reel with the intent on jigging and chunking inshore bluefin in the 30-150# class, and yellowfin/longfin in the canyons, as well as a tilefish/deep water bottom fishing reel. Loaded with 600 yards of 65# JB solid, it has worked flawlessly so far with a few trips and quite a few fish under it's belt so far. The drag is smooth right out of the box and the reel is very read more easy to service yourself. If you plan on fishing this reel with a longer mono topshot, fill it with 500 yards of 65# braid, 600 yarsd of 65 fills it right to the top with only just enough room for a 30 or so foot wind on.

Great bottom reel

This reel is super strong and has an awesome drag. Gear ratio is perfect for bottom and overall very durable reel.

You can certainly use the 25 for surf casting, it would pair well with a heavier 13' surf rod for your application. The Shimano Torium 20 is another great option for your application, and it is currently in stock.

I would recommend pairing this reel with at least an 8' MH rated rod if you plan to use it off the surf and piers.<p>It is difficult to find rods that meet these specifications, I would recommend looking into the Tica Dolphin conventional surf rod line fo

The 30's and 40 sizes could be used for trolling mojos and the Penn Fathom 30's are similar in size to the MXL reels.

I would recommend taking a look at the BlackHole Rods. They are rated for heavy drag settings and heavier braids to handle larger pelagic fish. You can find more information on these rods through the following website link; http://www.tackledirect.com/bla
