New for 2018 the Penn Fathom II Level Wind reels make a number of improvements on the previous generation which was well received as one of the most durable and castable star-drag conventional reels in its class. The key addition in the Fathom II is Penns Fast Gear Access Sideplate. Penn recognized ...that conventional reels are difficult to service and anglers often find themselves without a reel while it is at a shop or back at the factory for maintenance. The Fast Gear Access Sideplate was implemented with the intention of making self-servicing a more realistic option for many anglers. The sideplate on all Fathom II models is easily removed by removing 4 screws. This allows anglers access to the entire gear box without worrying about losing springs or other small parts. The Fathom II was designed as a levelwind reel with a model for every angler with the durability and ease of maintenance Penn is known for! I have yet to actually fish with it, but I hope to use it very soon. I have several other Penn reels, including another Fathom II, so I'm confident that it will perform as advertised. It is a large reel, even slightly larger than I was expecting based on the pictures and description on the website, and is fairly heavy, but that is what I wanted. It appears well designed and constructed, like all Penn reels, and should not have a problem hoisting large reef fish from the depths of the Gulf of Mexico where I fish!

Just picked this up the 15LW for heavy catfishing. Haven't had a chance to tangle with anything yet, but I'm looking forward to it. The reel is light for an all metal build, and it's just as solid as you'd expect. I've got nearly 300 yds of 50 lb power pro on it, with a short mono topshot, this will give me all the capacity I could possibly need.

I had to return it since I felt it was too heavy for my taste, line counter wasn't accurate either. I will stick to Shimano, way smoother, lighter and line counter does not miss a beat.........

I have a Abu Garcia Veritas Toro 79 MH rod and Im thinking about putting the 15 size reel on it for light nearshore bottom fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, Tampa, Fl area. Mostly like small snapper species nothing over say 10 pounds. Could this be a go
