Honestly the best budget shark catchers

Been using one of these that is older than i am alongside of my Avets for many years now. Like to call this the " poor mans shark reel" because it is inexpensive, can take a beating and asks for more, and will drag in some pretty darn big fish without issue. These reels are true classics.

A year ago friend of mine asked me "What Rod and Reel should I get for Mako's" after making a few recommendations to him he said "I've got about $250 to spend"?
I replied to him "Ile get back to you on that one" as I was stumped?
After I looked through the WHOLE range of Rods, Reel's, Combos and lines on the Tackle Direct Website I called him over and showed him this fine read more penn combo.
I told him It comes from a reputable Brand and It would be at least a good starting point for him, besides Tackle Direct doesn't sell stuff that's not worth using, regardless of price, I told him to get this combo and some 80 lb Power Pro Hi Viz and gear up and get ready as I had promised to take out my Brother For his birthday in about a month from now so I thought id kill two birds with one stone!
Two weeks later he turned up to my place with brand new gear in tow, I spooled his reel up and told him I thought had had brought a Lot of kit for his money,
He walked out to his car a promptly returned with another same combo in tow and said "This is a present for your brothers birthday".
About two weeks later we were at Portland at a Place called "The Horse Shoe" 650 M Deep water on the edge of the Continental Shelf.
We started a Burley trail then put out Three rods and balloons with Squid and cut Mackerel bait.
An hour later the Penn combo went off.
It was lift and wind for all three of us and after two hours of hard fighting and lots of shank jumps we had a 200 lb Mako tied to the back.
The combo performed flawlessly.
What a top piece of kit what a top Trophy What a TOP birthday.

Disappointed in product

Tackle direct was great . Reel had grinding feel and noise out of the box. I have 5 other 113 reels. Returned and replaced easily but replacement was the same. Took a chance and opened up crank side of case and found very little grease. Used Penn blue grease. Much better but not perfect. I guess I'll move on to new brand of reel if this is direction Penn is headed.

I am looking to get my 1st Shark fishing rig. I will be surf fishing and need to cast my bait into the surf, would this reel size be to big for that? If so, what size do you recommend? I would like to use it to catch other fish as well. Thank you!

Hi Codey, I would actually recommend using a Shimano Baitrunner Surf Beach Combo. Specifically model: BTR12000D / BR1530S10CT; TD Code: SHM-1932. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-baitrunner-btr12000d-beach-runner-br1530s10ct-surf-spin-

Jeremy, That combo is a little too big, I would recommend talking a look at the 209 Penn senator. PEN-0037
