Its okay

Robin

As many others have mention the line lay is great the slow oscillation is great, its cast alright, reeling it in however is where the issue is for me the frame flex on it is crazy and make the reel feel as if it will snap at the foot seat next to the rod. other than its a okay big reel for a low cost point.

Value reel

Have used this all 2021 season now, and it's proved to be dependable. As another review noted, line lay is great, slow oscillation feels smooth. As an 8000 size reel, holds a good amount of line even if you're slinging thick 40 lb monofilament for some specific application.

Only issue I have had is with a couple of nicks in the spool lip - admittedly I am rough on my read more gear, but those have been an annoyance that I haven't had issue with on my other reels, so I dropped a star.

Have used this reel in all shore applications from bay to surf/jetty, and CC Canal. It's more beefy than what I need in most situations, but generally I like to end the fight quickly and return fish to the water without tiring them out. As you would expect from the drag rating, slot stripers can't pull drag on it. It's a big reel, but the weight of it is fine for me personally, even casting repeatedly. Others might prefer this reel strictly for chunking from the beach, but I plug and jig with it as well.

I have dunked this multiple times by accident while wetsuiting and have taken direct hits from waves on jetties with no signs of saltwater intrusion yet.

Love this reel

I use this reel to snag paddlefish. With 80lb braid you can still sling it out there where the big ones are running.

Long Surf Caster

It's amazing how well the line lay is on this reel. The slow oscillation works well! This reel is heavy but it matches well with a 11 foot surf rod. I don't plan to do much popping or jigging with it, but it fits the need for that one rod/reel combo that I need to get out there. It's a niche reel designed for maximum distance when surf casting and it does it that well. There read more aren't that many long cast surf spinning reels on the market so I'm glad that Okuma makes this and TackleDirect carries it.

Used it other day fo Strippers in upper Hudson River, Took a several schoolies, but did hook into a Large Pike, in the 25 pound class.
The drag stopped her dead, and this thing cast a mile!
Now where can you buy a reel for a C note, that has the power like this!

Impressed with Okuma Surf 8K & Tackle Direct

Did a lot of research shopping for a new surf reel. Tackle Direct's site gives you all the specs at your fingertips for comparison purposes. I watched a lot of YouTube videos, including John Bretza's from Okuma. I also contacted Okuma with questions and received quick & informative responses from Regional Sales Manager Mark Rogers. Reel is solid, great design, slow oscillation, read more sturdy bail wire and spool. For $99, I don't know how you beat it. Also bought an Okuma Cedros CSX Surf Rod. Ordered on Labor Day (Monday), reel was delivered on Friday. Very pleased.

Asked by Brendan 5 years ago

I have a Okuma Cedros reel that is really nice but to retrieve with your right hand, you must wind the handle on counter clockwise, so when you have to reel hard, the handle comes loose.

Is this the same case with this and other Okuma reels? If

Bernie De Graaf 5 years ago

If you reel counter clockwise you're automatically loosening the handle you always have to reel towards the rod tip for the reel to function correctly.
