Caught my first Blue Fin using this reel!

Eli

I used my new Metaloid 12ii on a 1.5 day Tuna trip in San Diego. Caught 2 40lb Blue Fin and never put the drag past "strike mode" pulled both in under 15 minutes. worked smooth. Easy casting and pulled like a truck

Strong reel for bluefin Tuna

OC F.

I landed a 135 lb bluefin tuna from an anchored boat (San Diego boat sportfishing) with this reel - Okuma Metaloid 5ii LX 2 speeds using 50 lb braid line and 40 lb monofilament. Two hours fight and I thought the reel would break, but it did not break. This reel is strong for big strong fish.

Some good some bad

quality control seems to be lacking on these reels, problems with the anti reverse pawls not engaging or skipping, resulting in a backwards spinning handle. also when backing off the drag, it goes from strike, down a few clicks, then suddenly total free spool, theres no light drag setting. Drag is not linear
ive used this reel for salmon, lingcod, halibut, rockcod, albacore, read more small yellowfin to 8 ft sturgeon, I would like them a lot more if they just worked all the time. the two speed is really nice and the drag is very smooth. between my friends we have 7 of these reels, 3 have had problems, but for some reason i still like them

Great Reel and a good value

I've had my reel for several years and have it spooled with 65 lbs braid. I have pulled up very large Red Snapper, Cobia and Grouper with no issues. For the size, it has much more power than my Avet LX with almost double the max drag. I've had no issues with anti-reverse or anything else to that matter. At half the price of an Avet SX raptor, you can't go wrong in my view.

Great two speed reel

Reel is very smooth, drag is, at 24 pounds, plenty strong to land large fish. I could not be happier with this reel.

Great reel for the money

This was my first 2-speed reel and it has been a great reel. The drag is super smooth and it is pretty light.

Great reel

This reel is great . Can pull up any size of fish and the smoothness is superior. I have the left handed with 2 speeds . I use it primarily for slow jigging and it’s excel in this job.

Anti-reverse bearing

Lee

I've spool this reel with 50lbs braid but haven't got the chance to use it yet. 4 star due to the fact that the anti-reverse seem not to work as it should as others have mention. There is a 1/4-1/2 inches of back movement on the handle.

Amazing reel

This reel is all around a great reel. The drag is strong, it holds a lot of line (500 yds of 50# braid + mono backing), is extremely smooth with a very positive lever drag and clicker, and is extremely durable. It feels like a much more expensive reel for the price

Not good

bought one and took it out on 2 trips, and broke. drag would not tighten, and when tighten cant turn handle. buddy had one and drag failed brand new out of the box. another buddy had 1. same thing drag failed, and anti reverse failed. cheap reel = cheap parts that break, spend the extra money and buy a quality reel. stay away from the metaloid

Super Drag System

Reel is great, I've caught yellowtail, yellowfin, and dorado on it with no problems. Drag is smooth and can handle nice size game fish

Great 2 speed for the money

Great reel and fun to use. I use mine for bottom jigging for lings and this reel brings up 7-12 pounders like a champ. I feel that this reel could handle much bigger fish too with 15lbs of drag! If I had to compare it to any other reel it would be an avet sxj two speed except half the price!

Possible faulty product, but this reel has MAJOR issues

Vince V.

i recently bought an okuma metaloid 5II. I have an andros 5s for comparison. basically, the reel looked amazing. freespool time was 32 seconds out of the box. the TWO HUGE ISSUES I HAD are as follows....
1. reel handle back winds. i think the anti reverse slips sometimes and the reel wind back anywhere from 0.5" to 1.5" worth. not good.
2. drags are faulty. i set read more drags for 9lbs at strike. then i checked it at 1/4 strike... 0lbs. then i checked at 1/2 strike... 0lbs... then i checked at 3/4 strike... 0.6lbs.
* i checked the same settings on my andros and this is what i got....................0.24lbs.................................................0.48lbs.................................................. 4.0lbs.

I'm going to have to contact Okuma customer service and see if these problems are due to a single faulty product... or if they are all like this.

Asked by Ralph 10 years ago

Need a size compairison of the Okuma metaloid 12II, a friend bought a MK5II and said it was about the size of a Avet SX. Is the 12II the size of a Avet MX. Thanks in Advance for your reply Ralph C

Customer Service 10 years ago

Hello Ralph. The Okuma Metaloid, as far as size, is the same overall size as both the Avet SX and MX. With the only difference being slight offsets in weight, the basic sizes are all very similar. I hope this answers your questions and as always please
