Great reel!

Love this reel so far. Only used for bottom fishing in Colonet. Worked like a charm. Haven’t caught any pelagics on it yet but I can’t wait to cast live bait with it and put it to the test. I hope the drag is easier to adjust mid fight than the meteloid. So far this reel performed great!

Dorado and Yellowtail

VERY nice reel, smooth drag, light and easy to use. Landed several yellowtail and Dorado on an epic san diego bite on the New Loann. Worth every penny..have it on a calstar medium rod 30 to 60. Im sure the reel handle a 100 pounder if needed.

Smooth and powerful

It was smaller than I expected but it holds enough braid that I feel comfortable with it.

Light Smooth and Powerful

Matched to an Okuma PCH 7ft rod 12-30 lb class rod an amazing combo. Small profile, easy to handle, turns under pressure beautifully. Just enough line on the narrow spool that fills pretty evenly. Needs an educated thumb to cast but gives out line easily. The rod has immense power for its size on CA rockfish and lingcod. Compact, light and so easy to handle.
I son't take read more anything else on the party boats now. I leave my Shimano Tranx 500 HG with 8ft graphite carbon rod at home. I like the compact feel of Okuma reel and with the 2 speed if I need it it has the power. It feels easier to turn and retrieve.
I plan on selling my Tranx 500HG and picking up the narrow spool Okuma Cavalla 12N.
For the type of fishing I do, I am just more comfortable with the Cavalla. I though a bar release would be good, but not necessary and the narrow spool eliminates the levelwind guide on the Tranx 500HG. Not to knock the robust machinery of the Tranx 500HG. I just found the Cavalla equal in the handling mode with a nicer compactness and no side play when reeling up from 300 ft bottoms. Just my take, but hey isn't that what fishing is all about. In this price range its hard to buy a bad reel!

is this a good reel for fishing for snook, tarpoon, and king fish out of florida. would the penn fathom 2 speed or this reel be better.

Alex T 3 years ago

Im sure a size 12 would suffice for targeting these fish, both this and the Fathom boast full metal construction which is important for fighting strong fish.<p>The major difference in the two reels is the Okuma is a very compact design opposed to the Fath
