Awesome drag and power for a reel this size

JAMES B.

I matched this reel with a 6’6” medium weight Shimano Trevala and 40lb braid. It effortlessly handles those times when I hooked Jack in the 15-20 pound range and some large cubera snapper (I fish in Costa Rica and there’s some big jack here and cubera here). It’s also lightweight so really no strain with this size real. I have been using it with jigs between 60g-200g no problem.read more />
I liked the design so much I ordered an 8000 to go with a medium heavy Shimano Trevala for deeper jigging.

Save your money on those real expensive reels. Buy more jigs instead. You’ll need them.

Great reel. I’m using it on my Century Weapon Jr.

Solid and well built

I have used this reel about a half dozen times for surf casting (in the surf). It gets splashed quite a bit. But, I rinse it gently after use and spray silicon lub on the roller hearing etc. I think it is one of my sturdiest of my reels. The drag is nicely adjustable. I also have a 6000 version that I like.

The only downside is the big mq s are a bit heavy.

Smooth drag

This reel is largish, but not too heavy. I haven’t submerged it yet. But, it seems well made and water tight. The drag is reasonably progress.

Strong and versatile 3000

I've had this reel for three months now and used it for both shore casting (to catch 1/4 to 1 lb fish) all to dropshop in 60 to 100 yards of water (to catch 2 to 4 lbs hard fighting spangled emperor or yellow edged lyretail). It stood the test very well in both applications.

I have had it for three months now and used it shore fishing 1/4 to 2 lbs fish all over to dropshot outside the reefs in 60 to 100 yards for 4 to 10 lbs hard fighting spangled emperor and other lyretail grouper which fight hard.
The reel stood the test in every situation and the drag performs really well.

This reel is nice and heavy. Solid build and quite big. Think of holding a cantaloupe in your hands, weight and all. That's what this reel is like. I have this paired with a surf rod and can't wait to test it out. 5/5 met all my expectations. Fast shipping!

This is my 2nd Daiwa spinning reel in recent months. I like that it’s very smooth and sturdy, it performs like a bigger reel. I would recommend this reel.

For Long Island and Jersey surf fishing using lures 1to3OZ what size do you recommend to pair up with a 10 foot rod?

The BG6000, or BG8000 size reel would pair with a 10ft rod for surf fishing.

Want to start tuna popping this year with a Terez XH 6'8". Wanted the Saragosa 14000 but doubt that's going to happen...looking for the best available alternative between the BG MQ and Saltist or other alternative (higher ratio, at least 300 yards of 65#

The best option between those two reels would be the Saltist 8000. A better option would also be the Shimano Spheros 10000SW or 20000SW.

For that rod I would go with the 4000 or 5000.
