This Chinese made reel in no way reflects the Abu Garcia standard of yesteryears.
It is a quasi attempt to satisfy a price point and capitalize on the AG name.
With only one bearing and plenty of plastic, there is a flip style dog that acts as the only anti reverse mechanism
Not a reel that will last.

as last 30 years of Abu Garcia, but alas, for modern gear, it is good quality and actions

Absolutely love every thing about this reel. I have caught 35 pound bull reds off the jetties and 10 pound snapper with this reel offshore I can't say enough good thing about it.

I have fished this reel and variations of same for as long as I can remember or near about 50 years. While this is most probably the least expensive reel I would consider buying, in my opinion dollar for dollar as an all around solid performer, if your in the market for a good reel this one is hard to beat.

Bought the reel for my grandson for light tackle fluke fishing because I have owned one for years and for this purpose it can't be beat.

Does this reel have a metal (aluminum) spool or plastic? What type and sized bearings are in the spool and levelwind?

Hello Hugo, The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur has a aluminum spool, it is equipped with 10 stainless steel bearings +1 roller bearing all while utilizing Abu Garcia's trademark Carbon Matrix drag system.

wHAT DOES -c AT THE END OF THE MODEL MEAN? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THAT AND THE MODELS WITHOUT -c?

Dee,<p>The '-C' designation for Abu Garcia reels means it comes in a plastic clam pack container and not a box. It's the same reel, just how it's packaged. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with. </p>

What's the difference between the AMBS-5500 and the AMBS-5500-C?

C stands for Clam Pack. That is plastic packaging where as the AMBS-5500 is in a box.

Can i use this reel for saltwater fishing...particularly redfish, trout and flounder.

James, this would be a great reel for bait fishing, how ever it would be on the heavier side for throwing artificials.
