Mono vs fluorocarbon vs braid

FishingCritic is research-led, using maker data and published sources. We have no hands-on test results for this edition.

Choose by diameter, stretch and buoyancy rather than pound test alone. Berkley describes braid as thin with very little stretch, nylon mono as more stretchy and floating, and fluorocarbon as sinking.

How do the three line types differ?

Each type trades handling, stretch and visibility. The table summarizes Berkley’s published comparison; it is not a measurement from Fishing Critic.

TypeStretchBuoyancyWhat to consider
Nylon monofilament (mono)More than braid or fluorocarbonFloatsStretch can cushion a pull; line memory affects handling.
FluorocarbonMore than braid; responds differently from monoSinksConsider a sinking line’s effect on a floating lure.
BraidVery littleFloatsMore visible; a leader may suit clear-water presentations.
Volume comparison, not a breaking-strength comparison.

Does equal pound test mean equal diameter?

No. Our sourced examples show 10 lb Trilene XL at 0.011 inch (0.2794 mm), 10 lb InvizX at 0.260 mm and 10 lb Smackdown at 0.205 mm.

These are three named products, not universal figures for mono, fluorocarbon and braid. Select your exact line in the capacity converter; do not substitute a type-wide diameter.

Can a thinner line hold more length on the same spool?

Yes, under the converter’s fixed-volume assumptions. Estimated length changes with the inverse square of diameter, so a small diameter change can make a substantial difference.

Line shape and packing still matter. The tool shows the actual two diameters in its calculation. It cannot establish abrasion resistance, knot strength or suitability for a fish.

How should you make a line choice?

Start with the lure and how you need it to behave. Then check the reel’s exact capacity and the line-maker’s diameter, knot and use instructions.

Keep the decision separate from a claim of field performance. This edition records published facts and transparent calculations.

Which exact lines are used in the setups?
