Sapphire XT 701MH

James

So I swapped out all my rods that came as combos because they were starting to break and/or mismatch so I went with a relatively cheaper rod for my lower end but reliable reels.
The Sapphire XT 701MH looks great, very strong and looks well built but when then advertise medium-heavy they mean it and probably on the heavier side. This was a exact match to my penn pursuit rod read more that had a 4000 spinning reel on it but this rod is muvh to heavy for the 4000 size so once i can find 2 extra 5000 series if not a 6000 series reels I will put them on these rods.
Over all the rod is great but summer isn't here yet and when it comes I will update my review because we have a tendency to be extremely rough on our rods so hopefully these will make it through the season.
The 701MH will mainly be used for lighter near shore fishing for kings, triggers, snapper, Jack's and working bait around structure or weed lines for Mahi so once we put some fish in the box I will update this review.

Well made but heavy

Really substantial rod, solid parts. Sensitivity is average. Power is very apparent. Unfortunately it is also very heavy. If you're used to graphite rods, these feel more like a straight glass rod instead of a composite blend. Certainly well made, but the weight of the rod makes it a little less enjoyable to fish with.

Best rod brand out there for the price

They are literally manufactured around the corner from where i live ( less than 5 miles) in Mahwah NJ and are truly fantastic. I would recommend this company to anyone, plain and simple. This is my current pole from bottom fishing to Mahi Mahi and even smaller sharks. I even caught a 300+lb shark on my tsunami reel rated for 40 lb and my tsunami pole rated for 80-100 pound line read more in a chum slick 10 ft from the boat and wrenched him in. My father went out and bought a $300 custom rod years back for it's lightness and sensitivity, but when i handed him my rod to hold so i could get a sandwich, he he wouldn't give it back and went out and bought one of these. The thing is so sensitive you can literally feel the types of ocean floor terrain you are on, and distinguish bites from that, and also it is light as a feather.

Asked by Will 4 years ago

Is the 7ft conventional rod light? What’s the weight on it, I’m thinking about this or the penn marienr which one would be lighter?

Sydney 4 years ago

Penn makes a Medium power version of the Mariner. The Tsunami Saphire XT 7'0" is a medium-heavy rod. The Penn rod is a foot shorter but is the lighter weight rod.

The SX would be a great match with the 7 ft conventional model.
