This rod has a very attractive cork butt and is outfitted with a very strong reel seat, the glossy black coating on the blank is aesthetically pleasing. The blank is very stiff but also sensitive and provides plenty of rigidity for long casts from the surf. The downside to this rod are the guides. The guides are not finished very well and are very brittle the rod came with a guide… read more shattered during shipping and one with blotted epoxy within the eye. TackleDirect got another one out to me quickly. The second one didn’t have any problems and has been good so far.

This is one of the better rods for the money. I have caught four citation Red Drum on this rod and it preformed as good as any more expensive rod.

Received it in a firm cardboard tub with airbags in it. It’s a Heavy action rod with a stiff tip but great casting distance with a 200g sinker.

could I potentially use the 12' XX-Heavy to catch tarpon from the surf? I'm on the hunt for a heavy enough surf rod to catch a tarpon with.

You wont get much distance casting with that reel for the surf but this will fit that reel and it will be great for catfish and for some surf fishing.

This rod is rated for 12-30 lb. test mono, which is roughly equivalent to 40-80 lb. test braid.
