Mighty Rod
This rod looks and feels good in my hands. Can't wait to cast it
Best Bang for you Buck!
I bought this rod as a tester to see if I wanted to get into the Surf rod business. I was quite surprised at how light it is...
Great pole for the price
Purchased this pole to heave the heavier lures that I have for the Cape Cod Canal. The lightweight allows me to fish all day and the length allows me to cast out further than I have even been able to reach. Pole is strong enough to endure the canals flow but reactive enough to let me feel the hits. Love it.
Great rod
I paired this with a Penn Fierce II reel, and tried it for the first time on the LBI, Jersey shore. I had onshore winds up to 15-18 mph, and was able to cast my rig a good distance. First cast, I caught a 21" striper. They weren't biting that weekend for anybody, and that was it for me. I am no expert-this is my first real venture & investment in surf fishing equipment, and considering… read more the casts I was making and the feel of the rig in the water & the fish on the line, I think I made a great choice.
Performs well, exactly what as expected
I have the 1551 model paired with my penn Fierce. The rod performs well, cast smoothly and you get a good distance with braid. action is great to pull in those bigger fish. I mainly fish for strippers during my trips to Hampton beach and this rod performs just the way I expected.
The 8 foot medium has been discontinued we are unable to get a weight on that for you
The 8 foot would be good if you don't have to cast a great distance but would be good for plugs up to 3oz in weight
The ssv5500 would be a good fit for any of these rods and Penn does not list a braid rating only mono.
Hello Mike, the rod is a 50/50 split each piece measuring 61 1/2 inches
I would lean towards the 12 foot squadron. You throw 4-8 oz lead with bait and that's exactly what that rod is rated for.
The squadron II 9 foot weighs in at 0.70 oz's

Here are the weights for the 10', 11', and 12' Penn Squadron II surf rods. The 10' weighs 14.43 oz. (0.9 lbs) The 11' rod weighs 1 lb, 1 oz. The 12' rod weighs 1 lb, 3 oz. Thank you for considering TackleDirect for your fishing needs.
The Penn SQDSFII1530S10 Squadron II Surf Rod - 10 ft. would be a good match for the size lures you will be using.
An 8 foot rod would pair well with a 4000-5000 size spinning reel.
The Penn Spinfisher 5500 would be the better fit paired with a 10' rod for surf fishing.
The 11 ft Penn Squadron II Surf Rod would pair well with the Penn Spinfisher 6500 casting 2-6 oz of weight.
