Heavy model for sharks

Chris

I got the heavy version of this rod to target sharks on boat trips. rod is super strong, but a little heavy. not really made to cast, so i dont see this as an issue. put an 8000 size or larger reel on is and hold on.

Perfect for Charter boats

Cracks in guides

Rambw3080c66

We Bought 12 of these rods for this charter season. 1st trip of the year, reeling up the 2nd fish one of them snapped in 2 between the 3rd & 4th guide. And also had one go down due to missing eyelet (which happens on a charter boat)

As the season progressed we started breaking braid, 4 or 5 times a trip. At first I assumed it was a bad batch of read more line. Respolled the reels 2 week ago with power pro and results were the same.

Preformed some pull tests at the dock Monday; tying the line to a cleat and putting a strain on the rod, 6 out the 10 remaining all cut the line at the 3rd eyelet from the tip. Upon close inspection each had a hair line crack in the ceramic insert.

Penn customer service was very unresponsive, blaming the issue on heavy use & was unwilling to work with us at all, even on the snapped “single use” rod. Now I know my testing wasn’t very scientific, but 6 rods with defective guides all in the same place, appears more systematic than “heavy use” wear & tear after 7 weeks (which that was when I tested them, I almost positive they’ve been damaged from the start of the season) Also of note, we had run the Slammer rods of the combo package for a few years without issues such as these.

When it was apparent Penn was not interested in addressing the problem on whole, I offered as a compromise that if they sent me replacement guides I would replace them myself. But unfortunately that offer was rejected as well. They are completely washing their wash hands of any culpability in this matter.

Just what I was looking for.

Matched up 2 Penn RAMBW2040C70LB to match up with some old Penn 330 GTI level winds i have. I was looking for an inexpensive rod that would look nice with the reels and also be functional, and these did not disappoint. I used the combo for rock fishing recently with 65 lbs red power pro spectra and 40 lbs short mono top shots with dropper loops for deep reds and ling cod (350-550 read more feet) and they worked fantastic. The rods were sensitive enough to feel the bite that deep but had plenty of back bone to crank the fish up, even with a double on and heavy weight. Very, very happy with the product.

Sweet looking pole

I’ll be honest for the price I bought this for I didn’t expect much. Number one question yes it’s made in China. Is it beautiful, does it seem functional yes, will it make a good light sea rod oh yeah!

I purchased 4 of these rods for use by friends on the boat. I happen to use them now myself all the time. I have them spooled with 20lb mono and they feel great. You can feel as soon as a fish starts to nibble on the bait. Caught a fish on my first time dropping bait (Bottom fishing) with one of these rods. I plan to use them trolling for Spanish and King Mackerel.

Rock Solid!

I bought two Rampage Rods for Bluefin fishing last year. Wanted to put some fish and time on them before reviewing! The rods are rock solid! From casting irons to fighting fish. Rods have a great back bone in the fight that hold up to big explosive runs. Well worth the price! This is one of the times I got more than expected considering what I paid for them.

Great valued rod

Great rod for the money

Just got into the Southern California bluefin tuna kite fishing and wasn’t really looking to spend 100-300$ on a rod for a kite but the rampage rod was perfect. It has the short length which is nice for moving around rods and it has a big guide that you can fit swivels through.

Good rod for guests...

This is a very good rod to give to those friends/guests who don’t have their own rods to fish with.

Penn Rampage Boat Rods Questions and Answers

Ask a Question

Asked by Carl 4 years ago

Would the 308076 rod paired with a squall 25n be good for tuna up to 50lbs.... could you pair this with Fathom 40nld2 for heavier tuna... if not what would you use for the 40?

Brian 4 years ago

That 7'6" Rampage will match up with both the 25N and 40, and would best pair with the 40. You wont have a problem with fish in the 50lb range on the lighter setup.

Frank 9 years ago

Rohan, these rods are a very good rod for the cost and would be a good rod to use for land base shark fishing.

Asked by brian 7 years ago

Would the RAMBW1525C70LB make a good cod rod? comfortable with 16oz sinkers?

Devon 7 years ago

This rod would be too light to fish with 16 oz sinkers. I would recommend RAMBW2050C70.

Asked by pw 7 years ago

Would this be a good match for a Avet sxj 5.3?

Devon 7 years ago

You could effectively fish with this combo, however given the compact size of an Avet SXJ it would more comfortably match up with a thinner and lighter blank.

Asked by Cameron 7 years ago

Is this rod good for trolling for kingfish and for surf fishing for sharks

Devon 7 years ago

I would recommend the 30-80 lb. line weight for these applications.

Asked by pw 7 years ago

I need a rod that can pull double duty as both a casting and spinning rod? Is there such a thing?

Tyler 7 years ago

Pw, Hello there is not going to be a factory rod that i carry that can be used like that

Asked by Rob 6 years ago

Which Avet SX would you recommend for this Penn Rampage medium heavy for inshore striper and blackfishing?

Donald 6 years ago

The Avet SX models would be good for that style of fishing. You honestly don't need a raptor for inshore blackfishing and for catching smaller striped bass inshore. You will have more than enough line and durability with just the SX model alone.

Asked by donatas 6 years ago

hi I wanto bay this rod but I have one question. I will be useing 700 gram pilk or lure and want 30-80 lbs 7.6 ft or 6.6 ft rod but top of the rod is need not so soft and not so hard what is best will be for use or what can recomend for me.

Donald 6 years ago

The 7'6'' rod would be the best rod for the application your using the rod for.

Asked by Arnaldo Baez 5 years ago

Rebecca Redington 5 years ago

Yes

Asked by frank 4 years ago

I'm looking at the RAMBW2050C70 model for an all-around trolling rod. I want to put 65 or 80 pound braid on the reel but see that the rod is rated for 20 - 50 pound line. Would this work? I'm looking for a rod in the 7 foot length. <br>

Chris Renna 4 years ago

Yes.  That's a good set up.

Asked by Dylan 4 years ago

Would the 7’6 Casting rod be able to drop 3-12oz sinkers comfortably?

Brian 4 years ago

Yes the, RAMBW3080C76 would be able handle dropping 3-12oz of lead without issue.

Asked by Vic 4 years ago

there are no lure rating for these rods?

Alyssa Madosky 4 years ago

Yes, Penn boat rods do not advertise lure ratings. They use line ratings as a guide to how heavy of a rod it is 12-20 being the lightest options and the 30-80 being the heaviest options.
