Fishing rods: power, action and length

FishingCritic is research-led, using maker data and published sources. We have no hands-on test results for this edition.

Do you need a spinning or casting rod?

Match the rod to the reel type. Our source tables distinguish spinning and casting families; the setups in this edition use spinning rods.

What do power and action describe?

Power describes resistance to bending. Action describes where the rod bends. A fast action bends nearer the tip; it does not mean the rod has more power.

Editorial reading guide; exact maker ratings take priority
PowerStarting jobWhat to check
Ultra Light / LightSmall baits and light lineUse the exact printed line and lure range
Medium Light / MediumFloat rigs and modest-weight luresA power label is not standard across brands
Medium Heavy / HeavyHeavier rigs and casting loadsCount sinker, hook and bait in total weight

Moderate action bends farther down the blank. Moderate-fast lies between moderate and fast. These labels cannot replace the printed lure range.

What length fits the job?
